Where we work on the Himalayan Plateau, girls spend long hours collecting fuel while their brothers attend school. Forests disappear as trees are felled to fuel cooking fires, and the pollution from these fires causes illness and death.
Nearly 3 billion people around the world face a similar fate because of their reliance on pollutant solid fuels like coal, wood, and dung to meet their daily energy needs. Pollution caused by burning these fuels in the home kills approximately 2 million people every year (more than half a million just in China).
We aim to save lives with the SolSource, a novel home solar energy system that provides a cleaner and more convenient energy option for people in China and around the globe.

Perfected through 13 rounds of prototyping and field testing with rural communities in western China, our SolSource Pro is designed to protect user’s eyes from harmful UV radiation and to provide a comfortable and convenient cooking experience. The SolSource Pro can boil a liter of water in ten minutes. Durable and weather resistant materials ensure a long lifespan. At 18kg, the SolSource Pro is sturdy enough to withstand the high wind speeds that occur in communities in the Himalayas while still remaining lighter than the 50kg bundles of wood women would otherwise need to carry back from the forests.
