Co-founder & CEO
Scot Frank is the co-founder and CEO of One Earth Designs. Scot received Bachelor’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT. He holds three patents: one for a novel breast cancer diagnostic tool and two for solar energy. His background includes founding three companies, working in IBM’s India Research Laboratory, leading MIT Development Lab’s China program, and advising renewable energy projects for the Clinton Global Initiative and Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room. Scot has been listed by Forbes as a 30 under 30 entrepreneur, and named an Unreasonable Fellow, Cordes Fellow, ECSEL Fellow, and Make a Difference Venture Fellow. Since childhood, Scot has had a deep passion for using technology to drive social and environmental change. He started his first company when he was in middle school. Today, he seeks out every opportunity to learn more about the world and build empathy between people. With One Earth Designs, he aims to change the way people around the world use energy.
Co-founder & COO
Catlin Powers is the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of One Earth Designs. Catlin graduated from Wellesley College with a double major in chemistry and environmental studies before continuing on to graduate studies in environmental health at Harvard University. Her research has been recognized by the US National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. She is also the recipient of the Marry White Peterson Prize for innovation in the biological sciences and the Camilla Chandler Frost Prize for contributions in the field of environmental studies. Catlin has been involved in establishing solar power, hydropower, and biomass gasification systems in India and has consulted on environmental remediation projects in the US and China. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Pentok Institute for the Empowerment of Rural Women. Outside of work, Catlin is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, plays the flute, and enjoys spending time outdoors. She also loves dancing, singing, and dressing up in goofy outfits.
Savina is an Executive Assistant and Office Manager at OED, where she does such a wide variety of critical jobs that it’s easier to describe her job by what she doesn't do. Trained in secretarial and administrative work and fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, Savina has an invigorating energy and acute sense of administrative best practice that she uses to keep the rapidly expanding company in order with an awe-inspiring efficiency. Outside of OED, she funnels her energetic personality into ballet jazz dancing, in which she is taking courses to brush up on her technique and occasionally performs dance show on the stage. She enjoys dancing on the stage with her dance buddies.
Chief Design Officer
Erica is an industrial designer by trade with extensive experience designing, developing and manufacturing products in Hong Kong and China. She leads all product-related efforts at One Earth Designs. Prior to joining the OED team, she was founder and CDO of Intuitive Automata Inc, a social robotics start-up. Erica previously designed and developed the Esprit kids footwear line for the US and Canada, as well as many products for Gap Inc. brands. She has the ability to take products effectively from concept to completion. Her oversight ensures that OED continues to create products that resonate with our users. There are very few things that Erica won’t try. She’s often hiking, cooking, kayaking, trail running, traveling, dancing, taking photos and eating. Can’t leave out eating.
Chief Financial Officer and Head of Strategy
Janet is the Chief Financial Officer and Head of Strategy. Janet was an Investment Banker for over ten years with an extensive experience in the Global Capital Markets. She started her career with Deutsche Bank's London Headquarters after receiving her BSc degree in Economics & International Development from the University of Bath. She moved to DB’s Singapore office to focus on the bank's expanding business in Asia, and was involved in many high profile debt-underwriting deals there. Janet was most recently a Director at Bank of China International's Capital Markets Origination department in Hong Kong, where she successfully brought many large Chinese corporate clients to the International Bond Markets and served as a key member driving the execution of these transactions. Janet spent a six months sabbatical leave traveling through South and Central America, where she came face to face with some of the biggest social and environmental challenges the world is facing, and decided she needs to do something about it. Her passion is for traveling and learning about new cultures. Janet has trotted through over 236 cities in 42 countries across 6 continents so far and counting.
Senior Electrical Engineer
Daniel is responsible for the electrical and electronic subsystems in One Earth’s products. His previous work includes the development of power electronics for high-altitude wind turbines and motherboard design for rack-mount servers. His academic background includes teaching and award-winning research at M.I.T., where he earned two engineering degrees. Daniel is also a former disc jockey at WMBR in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and has collected more than 500 vinyl records from thirteen different countries.
Business Development Director
Michelle grew up in California and received a B.S. in Business Administration from University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining the OED team, Michelle was a consultant in San Francisco specializing in the healthcare industry managing and improving the financial strength of clients. She was a core member in building the company’s internal Legal Services practice to bring to resolution high-dollar and systemic payor-provider issues. She spent time in Nepal as a volunteer researcher to develop and implement initiatives with local and international NGOs and USAID. Michelle is passionate about traveling and understanding different cultures – from playing in international volleyball tours to finding the next great diving spot and everything in between.
Fanny Yip is an Account Manager of One Earth Design. She was born and grew up in Hong Kong. She has over ten years of experience in auditing and accounting across difference industries. Fanny was responsible all operational accounting activities of accounts receivable and payables, payroll, and fixed asset transactions, monthly close of the operations general ledger and reporting. She is enthusiastic, self-motivated and dedicated to her work. During tenure she realize continuous improvement is vital so she self-study to enrich accounting knowledge and achieved her ACCA Qualification. She holds Bachelors of Arts in Accounting & Finance from Leeds Metropolitan University. Fanny loves hiking, spending time with family and friends, and travelling.
Xire Jiancuo has worked in the development sector in China for nine years and has implemented projects ranging from education and poverty alleviation to cultural preservation. Following his early education in Qinghai Province, China, Xire earned a BA in Cultural Anthropology from Reed College in Portland, Oregon and a Master’s degree in International Development Studies from Brandeis University. At Brandeis his research focused on early childhood development and preschool education. As an Office Manager for One Earth Designs, Xining, Xire builds partnerships with communities and government offices. He also researches energy needs and educational needs of the local communities, and designs and implements effective solutions. His hobbies include playing pool, reading history books and talking to elderly people.
Lucille holds her BS from Cornell’s College of Human Ecology and her MBA from Presidio Graduate School with a focus on global sustainability. Her current focus is on education and she has recently completed an illustrated book called Our Prosperous Planet. The book is meant to engage readers by illustrating new ideas about how to transform industries so that they may help create harmony on Earth. Lucille believes that art can be a catalyst for self-expression as well as planetary healing. Some of her past exhibitions have included the Corcoran as a Scholastics Gold and Silver Key Winner, the International Society of Systems Sciences, and an endangered species series exhibition at UN World Environment Day. Lucille's favorite things are swimming, yoga, hiking, belly dancing, biking, painting, writing, and rapid prototyping.
Prem Bahadur Bohara
Prem was born and raised on the roof of the world – Dolpa, a mountainous region of Nepal. He graduated with a degree in Journalism. He has been active in empowering local communities, especially children, through various local initiatives and projects. He realized that the mountain region where he spent his whole childhood has immense potential; the land is rich in natural resources and diverse cultural heritages abound. But climate change is a serious, growing threat. That’s why he is interested in stewardship for conservation of local environment, climate resilience and adaptation, and green technologies. By educating young people and working with local indigenous communities, he is seeking to explore more ways to support mountain people in their locally adoptable initiatives. He invites ‘global people’ to join hands with mountain people.
Community Development Associate
Sophie, based in Washington, DC, is responsible for community development in the US and internationally. She holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and an M.S. in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Johns Hopkins University. She grew up in nine countries and speaks fluent English, French, and Spanish, and loves learning about new languages and cultures. She has seven years of work experience in environment and international development, with Greenpeace in Washington DC, with USAID in Kinshasa, Congo, and with small NGOs in India and Haiti. She is passionate about solar cooking, and has been volunteering for over two years with Solar Household Energy, a Washington DC-based solar cooking organization, focusing on advocacy, research, and international project management. She is excited about joining the One Earth Designs team and promoting the SolSource in the US and abroad. Outside of work, Sophie participates in her co-housing intentional community, and enjoys dancing, singing, reiki, and studying nutrition.
Chief Business Development Officer
Clement has been involved with managing, mentoring, investing and building start-up companies for many years. He has extensive experience in the technology area and sales/marketing from years of work in the Silicon Valley and Greater China. Clement was the co-founder of Ambient Technologies, a broadband internet company that sold to Intel in 2000. At One Earth Designs, Clement is responsible for worldwide business and sales development. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Engineering Physics from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. Clement loves music and playing classical guitar. He enjoys reading great science and literary works and like acquiring cross discipline knowledge. He practices Tai chi and yoga and wishes to finish a Marathon run in the near future.
